CIMIC ACTIVITIES IN SOMALIA CONTINUE
Somalia.
The past 100 days have been particularly intense for the European contingent in Somalia following General B. Fabiano Zinzone assuming command at the beginning of August of the European Union Training Mission (EUTM). General Zinzone, being a CIMIC expert due to his past as MNCG Commander, implemented multiple interventions of Civil Military Cooperation Team (CIMIC), aimed at recovering the limitations imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, in support of the local population.
In the last quarter, the EUTM-S CIMIC Cell intensified its efforts to implement projects focused on essential support for the civil environment, involving various delicate sectors of Somali society that have particular shortcomings: health, nutrition, education, the prison system, agriculture and minority rights. The realization of these activities was made possible thanks to the work of specialists from the Multinational CIMIC Group of Motta di Livenza (TV), who did their utmost not only to realize the projects planned for the current year but also to triple the number of projects planned for 2021. All this to the benefit of the Somali population not only in all the districts of the capital, with particular attention to those particularly disadvantaged as indicated by the "District Commissioners", but also in the suburban areas recently freed from the grip of Al-Shabaab thanks to the intervention of the SNA, the Somali Army soldiers whose training is one of the main tasks of the EUTM mission.
Lastly, EUTM-S CIMIC stepped up its endeavors to provide a substantial contribution to somali women and minority rights in the pursuit of tailored projects oriented to increase women’s participations in the labor market and improving intervention strategies in the prevention of gender-based violence.
